Stretchable Nonwovens: Major Enabling Technologies and Recent Advancements
Over two decades of research has lead to a broad array of extensible and elastic nonwoven fabrics and composites from films, foams, nets, filaments, bicomponent spunbond, meltblown and other technologies. Key to these advancements are unique elastomers, fabrics, composites, and stretch activation processes for stretchable nonwovens. Many elastomeric polymers have been developed and refined for the nonwovens market including olefin-based elastomers providing good performance at a significantly lower cost than earlier polymers. The personal hygiene market has been a key business driver for stretchable nonwoven developments to date. A key question remains, however, as to the magnitude of future global business opportunity in this high-value, technically sophisticated category of nonwovens. With a history in nonwovens that spans many years and several companies, Mr. Brown will discuss the ultrasonic patterning of needlepunched nonwovens and how this technology is allowing needlepunch to target new market areas.
